Managed Services

Managed SOC

If basic antivirus and firewall defences are the first, preventative layer in cybersecurity, and security testing such as vulnerability testing and penetration testing are the second layer, then the third layer is 24/7 threat detection and response. This third layer is not only applicable to larger companies. Smaller companies, and especially those with special security, compliance or insurance requirements, are increasingly looking for cost-effective and manageable ways to obtain this higher level of security.

For many organisations the continuous collection and management of all kinds of logs from endpoints and network devices into a SIEM, with 24/7 monitoring and response to detected threats, is a task that is best outsourced to an expert organisation. Building an in-house, 24/7 Security Operation Centre (“SOC”) is simply too expensive. However, it is important to understand the scope and extent of an outsourced service. Ideally, for many, the outsourced service should operate as the client’s own SOC, taking the power to act on the client’s network and undertaking necessary remediation actions in response to threats according to an agreed “playbook”. In many cases, simply notifying the client of a complex threat in the middle of the night is not what is needed. Our idea of a Managed SOC, as opposed to an MDR service or Managed SIEM, is that there is a close and practical day-to-day relationship with the service provider, as if it was indeed an in-house SOC.

The Managed SOC can use a number of different software platforms to provide the threat detection and response service. In all cases, logs are consolidated and analysed, and tools pick out suspicious events and correlations. Threats are manually validated to remove false positives, and are triaged. Intelligence and knowledge about threats is applied. Threats are notified to the client as may be agreed, and actions may be undertaken on the client’s network to mitigate potential risks.

Managed-Antivirus-Firewall

Managed Antivirus and Firewall

This is an outsourced service for a specialised SOC (security operations centre) to remotely manage a client’s antivirus software and/or firewall, in order to optimise costs, access the necessary expertise at the SOC on a 24/7 basis, and improve security. This can be the start of a security outsourcing strategy which leads on to other managed services such as Managed SOC, for 24/7 threat detection and response.
